The 4 Stages of SNG’s:

  1. Early Game (9-10 players) — You should be playing extremely tight in the early game, playing only premium hands. You should not be playing any hands but big pairs and AK when out of position. This will create a tight image for you so that you can steal a couple of pots when the blinds get bigger. As the blinds start to go up, you can begin to loosen up your starting hand requirements, because the table will be shorter, and the blinds will actually be worth something
  2. The Bubble (4-5 players) — When you are one or two people away from the money, many short stacks will tighten up and try and fold their way into 3rd Place. These are the players you need to bully. Raise their blinds and steal pots from them. Don’t get into any situations where you are not dictating the action. Don’t make any bad calls.
  3. In The Money (3 players) — Now you have made the money. If there is a short-stack, he will probably loosen up considerably once the bubble breaks. It is not necessarily your job to bust him. Don’t go out of your way to get him out. Wait for a good spot, and if you can’t get one let the other guy bust him. The difference between 3rd and 2nd Place money is not much, but the difference between 2nd and 1st is considerable.
  4. Head’s Up (2 players) — Punish your opponent for being too tight. You will have a good handle on how he plays right now, and you can use that against him. The stacks will be short compared to the blinds a lot of times, so it may turn into 2-card Poker. If he folds too much, raise more. If he is too aggressive, wait to trap him. If he is a calling station, hopefully you can make a hand, and when you do, even 2nd pair, value bet it knowing he will even call you down with Ace-High.

Use this as a basic map for understanding the different stages of SNG’s. In future articles, we will go further into the strategies it takes to beat each level
